NIL is changing the game

Writer's picture: Tyresse TurnerTyresse Turner

College sports is in the midst of its most significant changes in a generation. A mixture of new state laws and NCAA rules changes that went into effect on July 1 have provided athletes with varying degrees of new protections and opportunities to make money by selling their name, image and likeness rights. Also known as "NIL". This will open up many opportunities for student athletes to make commission. This has been an ongoing conversation on whether or not student athletes should make money. Student Athletes bring in the most money to the schools because of the sale of tickets. So it should be a no brainer why college student athletes should make money off of their name, image, and likeness.

Since these rights are in play athletes can now sign endorsement deals with companies who want to use an athlete's NIL to promote their products. In exchange with these endorsement deals student athletes will be able to get paid. This process of NIL has been long overdue.

This is such an important issue and I think it’s great that you chose to talk about this topic. I Agree that the new rules surrounding NIL were a long time coming and I think it’s great that collegiate athletes now get a chance to make some money on their own because of how much money they bring to their universities. I will be curious to see what brands partner with which athletes in the upcoming seasons.

NIL is one of those issues that should have come to fruition way sooner than it happened. College athletes are produce Universities such as USC the bulk of their money. The fact that the NCAA created a monopoly is honestly disgusting and sad. I remember seeing that a % star football athlete is technically worth $250,000. Athletes such as a your self have every right to make money on their skills just as much as anyone else does from their talents. Awesome article.

I thought this was interesting! I do think it makes sense for student-athletes to sign endorsement deals with companies by promoting their products in order to get paid. However, in terms of student athletes bringing in the most money to schools in regard to ticket sales, I slightly disagree because I believe the games and the surrounding environment of the games are what brings a big part of the ticket sales. Overall, good post!
